U.S. Naval Sea Cadets
Spruance Division & Radford Training Ship
Minutes of the Meeting
Saturday, 1 October 2005
1. Board
Members
We had an excellent turnout for the first Parents Committee meeting of
the year. After everyone introduced themselves, we discussed the
current Board Positions. Jim McStravick generously volunteered to serve
as Treasurer. The current Board members are as follows:
President: Lynn Drucker
Vice President: Tim Diener
Secretary: Elaine Nasta
Treasurer: Jim McStravick
Board Member: Kay Ann Perez
Staff Liaison: Joyce Yager
Building and Grounds Chairman: Jorge Perez
2. Updating of Alpha List:
A spreadsheet containing parents email addresses and phone numbers
was circulated and updated. This will be forwarded to all the parents
via email to facilitate communication between the members of the Parents
Committee.
3. Barbeque Dinner for Canadian Sea Cadets Thursday, November 10th
at Headquarters:
Commander Starr explained all of the events surrounding the
commissioning of the USS Bainbridge. A group of about 60 Canadian Sea
Cadets will be arriving by bus the evening of Thursday, 10 November. We
are planning a barbecue at Headquarters at 7 PM to welcome them. A list
was passed so that everyone could sign up to bring a dish.
On Friday, Veterans Day, our cadets will be participating in
a Veteran’s Day Ceremony at Wellaby Park in Sunrise. The commissioning
of the Bainbridge will occur on Saturday, November 12th, and
all parents will receive an invitation to the event. On Sunday, the
Cadets will be participating in the Veterans Day Parade in Miami at Bay
Front Park.
4. Commemorative Bricks
The brochure detailing the procedure for ordering the commemorative
bricks that grace the entryway to headquarters was circulated, and
everyone who has not already done so was encouraged to order a
commemorative brick to enhance out entrance and as a fund raiser for the
Cadets.
5. Maintenance and Improvement of Headquarters Building
A proposal was made to add new landscaping to enhance the entryway
of the Headquarters building. Prior to considering this, however, it
was suggested that the building requires an additional coat of paint.
Plans to paint the building were made for this coming Saturday, October
8th. This will be coordinated by Luis, Jorge, Tim and
Henry. Henry generously offered the use of his commercial paint
sprayer, which should make the job go faster. Anyone who wishes to
help is welcome. I plan to bring coffee, donuts and muffins to feed the
troops, and I will also go out for subs, if the painting lasts until
lunchtime.
6. Cadet Pictures- December 10th
7. Holiday Party -December 17th- Headquarters
8. Yard Sale in mid-January-HeadquartersStart a box to save
items now!
9. T-shirts
Jorge is in charge of Sea Cadet bumper stickers and T-shirts that we
encouraged everyone to purchase. It is nice to promote the Sea Cadets
on our vehicles. It is also nice to wear an official parents committee
T-shirt, especially when we go on Sea Cadet sponsored events, so that
everyone knows who we are. Both items also act as fund raisers for our
cadet, though the profit margin is small.
10. Cadet of the Month
Tim Diener has made up a new spreadsheet to keep track of all the
criteria used to evaluate the cadets for this award. He volunteered to
make sure that the senior Petty Officer at each drill fills out this
spreadsheet, so that at the end of the month, the Chief Petty Officer
can select the Cadet of the Month, based on these criteria. A plaque in
the entryway at Headquarters has been reserved for the Cadet of the
Month.
11. Car pooling to Drills
Since Saturdays are busy for everyone, and we all would like to
conserve gas, parents are encouraged to carpool with other parents that
live in their neighborhood. An updated Alpha List should help
facilitate this.
12. The next meeting of the Parents Committee is scheduled for
Saturday, November 5th at 8:30 am at Headquarters.,
