U.S. Naval Sea Cadets

Spruance Division & Radford Training Ship

Minutes of the Meeting

Saturday, 3 April 2004

President:                                 Jeff Yager

Vice President/Secretary:         Elaine Nasta

Treasurer:                                Amy Welker

Parents in Attendance: Jeff & Joyce Yager, Elaine & Gene Nasta, Jorge & Kayanne Perez, Claudia Vance, Dean Merten, Dawn Lewis, Amy Welker, Ivy Francis, Dale Dixon

Carpooling – There has not been much of a response to the parent carpool link on the website.  We would need more parents interested in participating to be successful.  Jeff will be working to compile a contact list for the Parent Group and enquire about obtaining a copy of a current Alpha List from Admin.

Fundraising –

Bricks – It was decided that we would offer 2 different sizes for sale (4” x 6” and 8” x 8”) but would stick with one color/design (painted with black lettering).  Donation levels would be $50. for the 4 x 6 and $100. for the 8 x 8.  There will be a limited number of characters. A sample brick is available to be seen at the unit or  can be viewed on the website www.bricksrus.com. Since the area to be paved is so large, it was decided that we would start with the area directly in front of the door.  Amy Welker is looking into another donation from Home Depot for the plain bricks needed for the project. Jeff Yager volunteered to be in charge of this fundraiser since he has already been in contact with the company.

Calder -  Dean Merton and LCDR Starr met with a representative from Calder to discuss the possibility of sponsorship.  There are 3 different types of fundraising opportunities available.  Firstly, would be the “Bounce Back” program where Calder would donate a certain amount of free tickets to the Sea Cadets.  These tickets would be for free admission, parking & program.  For each ticket turned in at Calder, we would get a donation of $5. LCDR Starr is already working on tying this in with Fleet Week. Secondly, depending on the success of the Bounce Back program, we may be able to obtain a yearly contribution from Calder.  Thirdly, we could sponsor a “Day at the Races” and Calder would donate the tickets for us to sell.

Garage Sale – There will be a garage sale at Cypress Bay H.S. later this month.  We will be looking for donations of garage sale items to sell as a fundraiser for the Sea Cadets.  Gene Nasta will be responsible for this project.

Barbeque – We discussed to possibility of a parent sponsored BBQ.  Since we would need to rent a pavilion (CB Smith was suggested as a possible site), buy the food and provide some sort of entertainment, we decided that we would sell tickets.  We are looking at a cost of $3. per person.  No date has been set as yet, but we are looking at sometime in May.  We would need to look at a calendar and plan around other events already scheduled for the next couple of months.  Once we have a date, we can send home something to the parents to get an idea of numbers.

T-shirts –We hope to soon have T-shirts available for the Parents Committee to purchase.  We are still working on a design and cost.  Dean Merton is taking responsibility for this project.

Cadet of the Month – The Parent Group will be sponsoring a Cadet-of-the-Month award.  We will be purchasing a yearly plaque which will be engraved  with the cadet name for each month of that year. The cadet will also receive a certificate. Dale Dixon and Elaine Nasta will be responsible for this project.

Misc. –

- Jorge Perez will be replacing the security lights around the building.

- Jeff Yager will be creating a parent packet to be handed out on April 10th to all parents that are not attending meetings.  This will include a message about what we do and what we need, a contact sheet and a copy of the last meeting minutes.
