From: LCDR Alan Starr, Commanding Officer,
Team Spruance To: All Hands Subject: Monthly Report VIEW FROM THE BRIDGESeptember 2006 The Cadets of Spruance Division officially began the 2006/2007 drill year following the Labor Day Holiday, with a Recruiting Open House. Over 20 prospective recruits and their families came to our HQ building to learn all about the best youth development program in America! The Cadets spoke about their summer training adventures. The first year Sea Cadets and League Cadets survived their Recruit Training “Boot Camp”, held at Admiral Farragut Academy, and all graduated with pride in themselves and the inner-strength that can only be achieved thru trials and tribulations. The Cadets were invited to attend the first dinner meeting of the FT Lauderdale Council, and in Honor of the 44th anniversary of the Sea Cadet Program, and Sea Cadet Month, spoke about their summer training experiences at Leadership Academies, Master-at Arms training, Field Medical Training, Ceremonial Honor Guard Training, Navy Band training, Underway training on the Great Lakes and the Foreign Exchange program with the Royal Canadian Naval Sea Cadets, in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Several Cadets spent their summer at the Coast Guard Station, Ft Lauderdale where they were integrated into the Watch Section, and responded to several Search and Rescue missions. The Cadets had a great training day onboard the USS The Sullivans, DDG 68, where they donned the Navy’s complete fire fighting ensamble, manned the hose lines and learned Damage Control and pipe patching. We also spent the a day in training at the Ft Lauderdale Coast Guard Station, where they learned seamanship, law enforcement techniques, damage control, and underway training on the Station 41 foot Patrol Boat. The USCG Cutter Gannet got underway for a mission, and the Cadets lined up and saluted them as they left the Station. The Gannet responded by manning the rails, and returned our salute. The Training Plan has been developed for the Drills through December, and the Cadets have many unique opportunities to look forward to, including the Dedication of the Lone Sailor Statue, Veterans Day Ceremonies, the International Armistice Day Parade in Downtown Miami, Remembrance Day ceremonies with the Royal British Legion, and they will be taking the “Heart Saver Basic Life Support Training, at Holy Cross Hospital. In December we will have a Field Navigation Exercise, take formal pictures of the Cadets, and end the year with our annual Holiday Party. Respectfully Submitted,
