From: LCDR Alan Starr, Commanding Officer,
Team Spruance To: All Hands Subject: Monthly Report VIEW FROM THE BRIDGEOctober 2006 The highlight for the Cadets and Staff of Spruance Division was the dedication of the Lone Sailor Statue, on the Esplanade of Ft Lauderdale’s River Walk. It was a great Navy Day! Fort Lauderdale Council NLUS had successfully raised the funds to make this dream a reality. Fort Lauderdale now joins the ranks, and is the 8th US City to have a Lone Sailor Statue. The Cadets assisted the Dedication Committee by providing an Honor Guard at the entrance to the Esplanade, passed out programs and water, provided security, and escorts for the VIP’s. The importance of the Lone Sailor standing Watch, 24x7 will be a constant reminder of the dedication and sacrifices made by our Sea Services to preserve our freedom. The older Veterans present represented our past, the Active Duty Navy Sailors and Coast Guardsmen represent our present, and the Cadets of Spruance standing tall and proud, represent our future. Bravo Zulu to all of the members of Fort Lauderdale Council for this lasting legacy to our Sea Services. The Color Guard rendered Honors and Side Boys at the first US Southern Command Navy Birthday Ball, at the Miami Airport Wyndham Hotel. It was especially meaningful as the new Commander of US Southern Command is now a 4 star Admiral. The Color Guard also presented Colors at the annual banquet of the Daughters of the Confederacy, at the Las Palmas Hotel. Cadet Ryan McDaniel was advanced to Petty Officer 3rd Class, he and PO Quintana received Letters of Recognition from the Commanding Officer of Coast Guard Station Ft Lauderdale for their dedication and leadership during training assignments at the Station. Meet the Staff: LT Jeff Leibowitz has assumed the position of X.O.; Instructor Perez is the Operations Officer, with Instructor Randy Bieszczak as the new Facilities Manager.
