From: LCDR Alan Starr, Commanding Officer,
Team Spruance To: All Hands Subject: Monthly Report VIEW FROM THE BRIDGEMay 2006 The Spruance Division began the month of May with a Fleet Week Ship Visit to the USS San Antonio LPD 17. Command Master Chief Santiago arranged an outstanding tour on the Navy’s newest amphibious warship. All of the cadets turned out to work with the Park Rangers at Birch State Park, in support of the Annual Air and Sea Show on Ft Lauderdale Beach. The star of this year’s show was the Blue Angels, flight demonstration team. The Unit held the annual Mini-Boot Camp at Miami Dade County Park, Camp Greynolds, North Miami Beach., on 5/19-5/20-5/21. The purpose of the Mini-Boot Camp is to prepare the first year cadets for the Boot Camp Experience they will have this summer, with the 14 day and 7 day training at Admiral Farragut Academy in Sarasota. Over 40 Cadets and support staff made this a weekend to remember. The goal is to prepare the cadets mentally, spiritually and physically for the Boot Camp life changing experience. The older cadets provided the hands on training as drill instructors, and also ran a mini Petty Officer Leadership Academy, to train the second and third year cadets. Cadet Chad May was awarded the “Honor Cadet”; Cadet Delaney Brock was awarded the “Courage Award”; and Cadet “P3” Orion Rollins was awarded the Commitment Award. He lost his shoe at the beginning of the morning run, and asked permission to retrieve it as we passed it on the way back. That’s Commitment! PO3 Brandon Wascisko received the “Honor Cadet Award” for the Leadership Academy. The Color Guard presented the Colors for the reunion of Leo Greenfield’s World War II Fighter Squadron, and carried the US Air Force Flag in honor of their achievements. The Annual Awards Banquet was held at Tropical Acres and was the biggest attended event yet, thanks to Barbara and Leo Greenfield for their dedicated support. Mary Minnet presented the Unit with a $5,000.00 donation from Ft Lauderdale Council NLUS members. Special guests included CDR Sheryl Dickinson, USCG, Prevention Operations, Sector Miami, LCOL Connie Christianson, US Army Nurse Corps, Ret, LCOL Bob Weinstein, USAR Ret. The “Health Colonel”. LT Scott Rooke and LT Carlos Crespo, CO and XO represented the Coast Guard Station Ft Lauderdale. PO1 Jessica Vance was awarded her appointment to the US Naval Academy, PO1 Tim Nasta was presented his appointment to the US Air Force Academy, PO3 Toler enlisted in the US Coast Guard, and PO3 Quintana was awarded a scholarship to the US Coast Guard Academy’s AIM Summer Program. Change of Cadet Leadership was conducted with the help of Command Master Chief Brian Dovey, of the USS Mcinirney, FFG 8, to PO1 Christopher Williams. We ended the month with Memorial Day services at the City of Ft Lauderdale Cemetery, and at the City of Sunrise Memorial Day services. Respectfully Submitted,
