From: LCDR Alan Starr, Commanding Officer,
Team Spruance To: All Hands Subject: Monthly Report VIEW FROM THE BRIDGEJune 2006 The month of June began with a very special honor for LCDR Starr. He and his wife Rosalind were invited by the Canadian Navy League Branch in Barre, Ontario, to be the Inspecting Officer for the Annual Review of the Royal Canadian Navy Sea Cadet Corps Unit in Barre, Ontario. It was an honor and a memory that will last a lifetime. The Canadian Cadets and Officers treated the Starr’s like Royalty! LCDR Starr presented the USS Bainbridge Plank Owner Plaque to the Unit, and individual Plank Owner Certificates to each Cadet and Officer who made the journey to Ft Lauderdale in November to be a part of the Bainbridge Commissioning Ceremony. He presented a Bainbridge Commissioning Coin to the Member of Parliament. LCDR Starr presented Navy League of the US Membership Pins to the Canadian Navy League Branch President and the Regional Director. On June 10 the Cadets and Staff were treated to the annual Intercoastal lunch Cruise on the “Lady Lucile”, sponsored by NACAM United, and members of the Ft Lauderdale Council, NLUS. This has been an annual traditional end to the training year that began with the efforts of Captain and Mrs. Ed Fink, JAG Corps, USN Ret. The Cadets manned the rails as the vessel left and re-entered the New River in true Navy Tradition. Each of the Cadets had an opportunity to man the helm, and had their picture taken by Captain Fink. June 17th was our last scheduled Drill in which Awards were presented, and the new Bricks were dedicated and certificates presented to their sponsors, and major contributors were honored. The day ended in a Pizza Party, sponsored by the Parents Committee. PO Jessica Vance receiver her National Cadet of the Year Award from Captain MD Ford, USN Ret., the Executive Director of the Naval Sea Cadet Program, Washington, D.C. Captain Ford met with members of the Ft Lauderdale Council, NLUS, where he thanked the Council for their exceptional support of the Spruance Division, and toured the Spruance HQ. The best news was received by PO Nasta as he was packing and preparing to leave for the Air Force Academy, he received a call from the Naval Academy, with notification of his acceptance. He left that night to join Jessica Vance as two new Spruance Cadets to be sworn in and begin Plebe summer. They join the ranks to make a total of six former Spruance Cadets attending the Naval Academy, and one in the Coast Guard Academy. We truly are training the Leaders of Tomorrow!Respectfully Submitted,
