From: LCDR Alan Starr, Commanding Officer,
Team Spruance To: All Hands Subject: Monthly Report VIEW FROM THE BRIDGEJanuary 2006 The Spruance Division began the New Year with a Bang, literally! Our Unit HQ was hit by a drunk driver in a truck over the New Year’s weekend. The truck, owned by a local electrician drove through our pilings and anchor chain, knocked over our WWII search light, and came to rest making a hole in the wall of our Admin Office. The driver abandoned the vehicle and a passerby notified the FT Lauderdale Police who filed a “Hit and Run” police report, and had the vehicle towed and impounded. LCDR Starr discovered the incident the following day and notified the Council Committee Chairman, Carl Hallberg. The Staff was notified, and instructor Perez instituted “Damage Control procedures,” and covered the hole with a ply wood patch. Captain Fink, our JAG is working with the owner’s insurance company. The Sea Cadet HQ Promotions list was just published, and a big “Bravo Zulu” goes out to Jeff Leibowitz for his well deserved early promotion to Lieutenant. Our new Instructors Jorge Perez and Tim Diener have wrapped their arms around our Training Department, and are scheduling Small Arms Training at the Hollywood Gun Club, and Fire Fighting Training at the Resolve Fire Academy in Port Everglades. Our Admin Department is concentrating on preparations for our Annual Admin Inspection to be conducted by our Regional Director, LCDR Marshall Muros from Okeechobee, on March 25th. The Cadets are preparing for the Annual Personnel Inspection to be held on March 18th, and we have all signed up for the Annual Ft Lauderdale Waterways Clean up, on March 4th. Our Drill Team is practicing for their performance at the Councils Valentine Days Ball, at the Westin Hotel on 2/14. Our Cadets are looking forward to the arrival of the USS WASP, LHD 1. We are working with the Command Master Chief to arrange an evening tour for the Cadets and parents. The Cadets presented Colors at the Council Installation Dinner, at the Coral Ridge Yacht Club. We congratulate Joyce Madzinski for an outstanding year as Council President, and pledge our support and cooperation to incoming president Mary Minnet, and her slate of Officers. We are very grateful for all of our supporters in the FT Lauderdale Council, and working together, we will accomplish our Mission, to train the Leaders of Tomorrow!es to all of our friends, shipmates and supporters for the Holiday Season, and happy, safe New Year! Respectfully Submitted,
