From: LCDR Alan Starr, Commanding Officer,
Team Spruance To: All Hands Subject: Monthly Report VIEW FROM THE BRIDGEApril 2006 The Cadets of Spruance Division and Training Ship Radford began the month of April with Damage Control and Fire Fighting Training at the Resolve Hazard Academy at Port Everglades. The Cadets experienced the escape from the smoke room in zero visibility. Next they were in water chest high as learned to repair broken pipes in and stop flooding in the WET Trainer. Finally they all donned fire fighting gear and manned double hose lines putting out fires. They were wet, tired and full of smoke, and loved every minute of it and want to go back! A big “hats off” to the instructors from Resolve who gave up their free time on a Saturday morning, to provide this very special hands on training! We had a visit from three Army Recruiters who joined us for our morning P.T. and run, and had a tough time keeping up with the Cadets! They talked about opportunities that the Army has to offer, and that’s ok, because the Cadet Program is all about offering opportunities, and learning how to make choices in life. The Staff traveled to Okeechobee to attend Professional Development Training with Officers and Instructors from Units in Boca Raton, West Palm Beach, Tampa, and a new Unit in Cape Coral. The remainder of the month was spent on planning and preparing for Fleet Week, the Air and Sea Show and our weekend away training for the “Mini-Boot Camp,” to be held May 19. This training is vital for the success of each individual first year Cadet, to give them the self assurance that they will make it through the formal Boot Camp at Admiral Farragut Academy. For all men and women in the Military, Boot Camp is a life changing experience. We want to make sure all of our Cadets are prepared physically, mentally and spiritually. This year we are also including a Leadership Academy for our second and third year Cadets, to introduce them to the principles of management and the care and well being of their subordinates. The Parents Committee held a very successful yard sale, raising funds for special Cadet activities. LCDR Starr represented the Spruance Division at the Change of Command for Admiral Peterman as he completed a successful tour as the Commandant of the 7th Coast Guard District. LCDR Starr presented a plaque to Captain Keith Taylor at the Change of Command of the Coast Guard Air Station, Miami. The world’s busiest CG Air Station. The Cadets ended the month with a very special after hours tour of the Aircraft Carrier Dwight D Eisenhower, CVN 69. The ship was anchored 2 ˝ miles off of Ft Lauderdale Beach making quite a sight! The Cadets were ferried out to the ship with crew, returning from liberty, and had an outstanding tour.Respectfully Submitted,
