VIEW FROM THE BRIDGE

September 2005

The Cadets of Spruance Division officially began the 2005/2006 drill year following the Labor Day Holiday, with tails of their summer training adventures. The first year Sea Cadets and League Cadets survived their Recruit Training “Boot Camp”, held at Admiral Farragut Academy, and all graduated with pride in themselves and the inner-strength that can only be achieved thru trials and tribulations. Senior Cadets attended advanced training at Leadership Academies, Master-at Arms training, Medical Training at Bethesda Naval Hospital, Aviation Training, and trips to Jacksonville, and Norfolk Naval Station. Several Cadets spent their summer at the Coast Guard Station, Ft Lauderdale where they were integrated into the Watch Section, and responded to several Search and Rescue missions.

The Cadets were invited to speak at the FT Lauderdale Council Dinner meeting and celebrated Sea Cadet Month with our sponsors. PO1 Jessica Vance was awarded the Navy League Teddy Roosevelt Medal for her outstanding Cadet leadership. LCDR Starr presented a Plaque to the Council that was awarded to the Spruance Division at the Navy League National Convention in Norfolk, for being the Number One Unit in the Nation for having the most number of Cadets Advanced to Seaman, (E-3).

The Training Plan has been developed for the Drills through December, and the Cadets have many unique opportunities to look forward to, including the Veterans Day Ceremonies, the International Armistice Day Parade in Downtown Miami, Remembrance Day ceremonies with the Royal British Legion, and the Highlight will be the Commissioning of the USS Bainbridge, DDG 96 on November 12th, and the arrival of 50 Canadian Sea Cadets from the Unit in Barre, Ontario, for the first Spruance/Canadian Foreign Exchange. They will arrive November 10th and be participating with all the planned activities for the Commissioning. In December we will have a Field Exercise, take formal pictures of the Cadets, and end the year with our annual Holiday Party.

Respectfully Submitted,
LCDR Alan Starr, USNSCC
Commanding Officer, Team Spruance
