From: LCDR Alan Starr, Commanding Officer,
Team Spruance To: All Hands Subject: Monthly Report VIEW FROM THE BRIDGEMay 2005 The Spruance Division began the month of May working with the Park Rangers at Birch State Park, in support of the Annual Air and Sea Show on Ft Lauderdale Beach. The star of this year’s show was the Air Force Thunderbirds, flight demonstration team. 12 Cadets and 3 Staff members had the thrill of watching the Air and Sea Show from onboard the Coast Guard Cutter, Gannet, anchored at the Centerline of the show. Our thanks to the crew, and Senior Chief Bradley, the OIC, and Chief Winans, the XPO, for their hospitality and a great opportunity for another adventure. The Unit held the annual Mini-Boot Camp at Dade County Park, Camp Owaissa Bauer, on 5/13-5/14-5/15. The purpose of the Mini-Boot Camp is prepare the first year cadets for the Boot Camp Experience they will have this summer, with the 14 day and 7 day training at Admiral Farragut Academy in Sarasota. Over 40 Cadets and support staff made this a weekend to remember. The goal is to prepare the cadets mentally, spiritually and physically for the Boot Camp life changing experience. The older cadets provided the hands on training as drill instructors, and also ran a mini Petty Officer Leadership Academy, to train the second and third year cadets. Cadet Ashley Diener was awarded the “Honor Cadet”; Cadet Delaney Brock was awarded the “Courage Award”; and Cadet Brandon Wacsisko was awarded the Commitment Award. Seaman Adam Drucker received the “Honor Cadet Award” for the Leadership Academy. The Color Guard presented the Colors for the Change of Command of the Coast Guard Patrol Boat, the Gannet. We wish Senior Chief Bradley fair winds and following seas as he leaves to take command of a Patrol Boat at Montauk Point. We welcome back Senior Chief Mellow, who was stationed at Station Ft Lauderdale as a First Class Bosun Mate several years ago. We ended the month with Memorial Day services at the City of Ft Lauderdale Cemetery, and at the City of Sunrise Memorial Day services where the Rifle Drill Team put on a demonstration. Respectfully Submitted,
