From: LCDR Alan Starr, Commanding Officer,
Team Spruance To: All Hands Subject: Monthly Report VIEW FROM THE BRIDGEApril 2005 April was an exciting month for the Cadets of the Spruance Division. Our Parents Committee held a very successful yard sale, and we are very grateful to all of the Ft Lauderdale Navy League Council members who donated a lot of good “stuff”. The two major events for the month were Fleet Week, and the Air and Sea Show. The Cadets were treated to an Adventure of a Lifetime, on board the Nuclear Fast Attack Submarine, USS Toledo. The Chief of the Boat made special arrangements for an evening tour that was the highlight of all the ships tours the Cadets have been on. They even prepared a special dinner for the Cadets and they really experienced submarine life first hand. Several Cadets even thought they now glow in the dark. The Spruance Division conducted a joint operation with the NJROTC Cadets from Nova High School, to support our commitment for the Air and Sea Show. For several years, we have supported the Park Rangers in Birch State Park, which is used for VIP parking for the Air and Sea Show. The Cadets learn a valuable life lesson, that we have to work hard to enjoy life’s rewards. The Cadets earn the right to watch the Air Show from a special place set aside for the Rangers and their guests. 15 Cadets had the opportunity of a lifetime to watch the Air and Sea Show from the decks of the US Coast Guard Cutter Gannet. The Officer in Charge, Senior Chief Bradley has always been a great supporter of the Spruance Division. The Gannett was positioned on the Centerline off of the beach, ready to provide support at a moment’s notice, if necessary. We were surprised to learn the news from George Anderson that our Ship Sponsor, the USS Spruance, has been decommissioned. We will keep our name as the Spruance Division, in honor of the lead ship in a class of Destroyers that made history, and to honor the memory of one of the great strategists of World War II, Admiral Raymond Spruance. Respectfully Submitted,
