The support we receive from them is exceptional as compared to support received by most other Sea Cadet units nationwide. However, even this exceptional level of support does not meet the full financial need of the unit. In fact, it provides only about half of the annual cost of operating Team Spruance. As a result, certain expenses need to be recovered. Chief among these expenses is the cost of uniforms. In 2003, uniforms cost the unit over $7,000. The assumption was that they would be returned as cadets graduated or otherwise left the unit so that we could pass them on to other cadets. Unfortunately, many uniforms either do not get returned at all or were returned in such bad condition that they could not be used again. As a result, we must now charge a very nominal fee for the uniforms your cadets will wear during their Sea Cadet or League Cadet careers. The charges will be no more than you would spend for Brownie, Girl or Boy Scout, Baseball or other uniforms for participation in other activities. A full compliment of uniforms (as required prior to attending Boot Camp) will cost League Cadets no more than about $115, and Sea Cadets no more than about $150…but the initial costs for League Cadets will only be about $80 and Sea Cadets about $110. The good news is that, as your cadet grows, you may not have to purchase the same items again in larger sizes. If the smaller sized item is returned to the unit in re-usable condition, the larger size of the same item will be provided at no additional cost! While we hope that most parents and guardians can help the unit by paying these expenses, for those for whom it is truly a hardship, we will try to find financial assistance to help cover all or part of the costs of your cadet’s uniforms. You can request such assistance by completing and signing the Uniform Policy Letter, or at any time discuss your situation with the Supply Officer or LCDR Starr. We will do our best to make sure that all cadets who wish to participate in the program are able to do so. Please obtain a Uniform Policy Letter from the Administration Office so that you can sign one, indicating your acknowledgement of the policy and, if necessary, request financial assistance for uniform costs. |
